Weeks 14, 15, & 16

Please excuse the break in updates! The bloggers have had a busy past few weeks so, once again, we’ll cover a few weeks in one post.

Weeks 14 and 15 continued cycle 5 for Sharron. Not much to tell other than continued, steady, positive progress. During Week 15, we discussed and evaluated the option of stem cell replacement therapy, since it is a decision typically made when cancer is in or close to remission. After discussions with several different doctors, it was decided that we would forego the stem cell therapy at this point. It is an antiquated therapy for myeloma, and drugs (such as the ones Sharron has been taking throughout chemo) are much more advanced and have shown to surpass the treatment effectiveness of stem cell treatment. Also, Sharron decided she did not want to undergo the intense procedure, which also comes with many risks and side effects. Her Kaiser doctors were supportive of that decision, and confirmed that we want to stay the course with the drugs being administered, since they are working well. One doctor compared it to a boxing match or fight- you don’t walk away when you’ve knocked your opponent down; you beat him into the ground until he’s really down. Or something to that effect! Sharron’s doctor also stated during an appointment that she has a slow but steady decrease in her protein levels (cancer indicators). In many cases and studies, slower responses mean longer remissions. Faster declines have shown shorter remissions and quicker relapses, so we are taking this as a good sign.

Week 16 began cycle 6, which was originally identified as the end of treatment cycles. After evaluating her current status and bloodwork more closely, Sharron’s doctor would like her to continue chemotherapy treatments for a few more weeks. This was not a shock, as 6 cycles is a benchmark at which doctors prescribe patient treatments; it can mean more or less than 6 cycles. The plan is to monitor progress over the next few cycles, and hopefully see a further improvement. At that point, Sharron could take time off, have a glass of wine, go on vacation with Val and the girls, and relax…chemo free! Her doctor also said that bodies can use a break from chemo, so she may take a break regardless of a further decline or not.

We’re looking forward to Mothers’ Day weekend and doing something fun with Mom! More updates to follow soon…

  1. Hi Sharron,
Thank you to you and your family for all the updates. I am so happy to hear of all the good news. I saw a movie 17 again with Hannah and my oldest Noelle last weekend. It is a cute movie. Hannah is going to the Junior Prom next Friday. I will send you a picture.

Me and the desk have been very busy lately as you can remember. May is tomorrow and I heard it is going to get even crazier. But no worry's. Take care and I miss you very much.
    Love, Shelly

  2. Dear Sharron,

Glad to hear the latest! The sense I get from your blogs is that you are in such good hands, both medically and of course with your family.

It's wonderful that your doctors can fine-tune your treatment so precisely. A friend of mine in NY attends an annual lecture by her oncologist at Sloan-Kettering and at his last one he said the advances in chemo are so amazing that many cancers are now being entirely eradicated or just treated as chronic diseases, like diabetes. Amen to that!

So wrap yourself up in that blanket of love and dream of a happy summer - you're almost there.

    love,
    Jean

Ashley graduates 8th grade next month! Talk to you more later. Love & miss you as always. Love Lesley.

  6. Sharron and Val,

We're thinking of you and hope all is continuing to go well.

It's 99 degrees right now and I think we're going to pass the 100 degree mark this weekend. Argh! Redding! We've been enjoying our memories of house boating days. Remember the time you (Sharron), Danielle, Andrew and myself took a "mud bath" in the lake? We pretended we were at a spa! Wonderful, wonderful memories...when you are up and running again we hope that you will consider heading on up here and we'll just have to experience some of those good times again. Mark and Val sitting on the roof of the houseboat sunbathing and enjoying some liquid refreshment.

Please know that you continue to be in our prayers and I offer up many a Mass for you. Love, Leslie & Mark
